7 Tips For Starting a Family Vlog and Making it Successful

The term ‘vlog’ is a short word for ‘video log’ or ‘video blog’. A vlog is like a diary, blog, or journal but in a video format. These are very popular today on several online platforms, especially YouTube.

Family vlogging has become a fascinating trend. With numerous types of family units out there, there are hundreds of entertaining YouTube videos for people with different choices. If you are thinking about starting a family vlog, the first thing you should work on is how you can make your channel or vlogs outshine the rest of the vlogs.

Reasons You Should Vlog

Nothing gets you more attention than vlogs if you are looking to increase your social media presence. Whether you are running a business or want to be a part of an online community for entertainment purposes, vlogging is an amazing way to promote yourself and market your products and services.

You have a wonderful family, and surely, all of you have amazing things to share and say. Now let’s focus on how you can capture what makes your family special and worth following. Read on!

But before you hop on to the vlogging journey, go through the 9 important tips discussed here to make it a pleasant one.

1.  Watch and Learn From Other Vloggers

Before you start, take out some time to learn how things are done. Make a short list some of the most viewed or most recent (or both) vlogs on YouTube and watch them. Spend at least a week or more to study the vlog styles and tactics. You'll find a huge list of family vlogs right here on vlogwatch.com. Of course, there isn’t one defined way to do a vlog and you don’t want to copy anyone. The real reason for watching others is that it will help you generate unique and fun ideas for your own family vlogs.

BIG TIP: Don't ever be afraid to ask other vloggers or even people that just like to watch family vlogs any question you might have about vlogging or how to make your vlog better. That's the only way we learn.

When watching these vlogs, brainstorm by asking yourself questions such as:

  • Why are their vlogs interesting??
  • What are their viewers commenting? What are they saying?
  • Do they film their vlogs in one go?
  • How long are their videos?
  • How are they connecting and communicating with their viewers?
  • What trends can you pick out in every video?
  • Do they edit their videos?
  • What topic are they vlogging about?
  • How quickly do they upload new vlogs?

Find your answers to see what works for successful vloggers and then you can adapt that to make yours reach that level.

2.  Vlogging Topic and/or Theme

Based on the vlogs you watched, short list the ones you like the most and think of focusing on that when you are producing your own vlogs. Of course, keep the ‘nature’ of your vlogs in mind, i.e., if they are going to be funny, GK based, travel based, etc.

For this, you have to first decide on the type of vlog you are intending to produce. Work to deliver value to the viewers through your vlogs. Having a consistent theme will attract more followers. Being all over the place will confuse your potential audience and they won't ever know if they should become a subscriber to your channel or not.

The good news is that you can play with different styles of vlogs every time while you remain consistent with your brand. If possible, write down a list of topics you’d like to cover. If you have multiple topics to cover, think of a way to create a streak of vlogs in which each one complements the other— even with different topics. This, however, shouldn’t compromise the diversity of each topic.

3.  Filming Gear (Camera)

As a beginner, you don’t really need a fancy camera with extraordinary features to create vlogs. Most vlogs can be perfectly made by simply using your mobile phone. This is what you should do to start with the vlogging game. Once you gain some experience and think that vlogging is actually your thing, progress to invest in cameras then and gradually start using more professional gear to improve video quality.

Whenever you are ready to buy a camera, you can consider the following models:

  • GoPro HERO 5 Black
  • Canon PowerShot SX730 HS
  • Nikon D5300 24.2 MP CMOS
  • Canon EOS Rebel T5i
  • Canon 77D (this is what I use and I love it!)
  • Sony a5100
  • SONY AX33 4K Handycam
  • Canon VIXIA HF R800

4.  Video Editing Software

Use the following tools to optionally edit them. These include both web and phone applications of which some are free, while some have advanced software and you to pay for them once.

  1. Filmora Video Editor
  2. Windows Movie Maker
  3. Pinnacle Studio
  4. Final Cut Pro
  5. Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite 13
  6. Adobe Premiere Elements 1
  7. iMovie (For iPhone)
  8. Adobe Premiere Clips (For Android)

5.  Creating and Customizing Your YouTube Account

The YouTube channels creation process is now integrated with Google and Google+, meaning it’s easier than ever before. You can create a channel using your Google account directly or if you don’t have one, sign up for Google first and then do it.

You will be able to see the “Create a New Channel” option in your YouTube account’s settings. The process is very simple.

While Google will pull your basic information such as profile picture and name, you can opt to customize your channel the way you like once it’s created. Edit your description, add links to your profiles and channels, and make the most of every customization option you are given.

Uploading your vlogs on YouTube is a no-brainer. Simply hit the “Upload” button on the top right corner, select the video, fill out the necessary information that is required, and upload it.

You can also use the official YouTube app to upload vlogs from your smartphone. This is a great choice if you don’t want to go through the hassle of transferring videos to your laptop and then uploading them.

6.  Social Media Promotion

The easier parts are all done; now comes the difficult one, i.e., promoting your content. Most famous vloggers promote their videos on every social media platform they have available including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest, and others. Do the same and share your vlogs with as many people as possible to increase the views.

7.  Audience Management

The final thing you should do to make your vlog successful is to properly manage your audience. Once you get the desired subscribe count and have people viewing and interacting with your vlogs, you need to learn how to interact with your loyal viewers and keep the trolls/scams out.

Treat your followers with respect, just like you do a close friend. Family vlogging is very personal and your vlog watchers are experiencing very personal things about you and your family. After sharing a video, reach out to viewers with direct questions. Ask them what they think about today's vlog. Ask them for advice and respond to their responses. The more you engage with viewers though Youtube comments the more fans will engage with you and your channel will grow. Ignore the haters and focus on the real people that make family vlogging so awesome and such a beautiful experience.

So, you are all set to embark on your vlogging journey now. You are prepared to avoid the bumps and deal with any that come your way. Happy vlogging!

A Perspective on Trolls

A Perspective on Trolls

@the-jade-john-show offer a positive way to look at trolls at around 6:25 here:HOW WE BEAT THE TROLLS LOL Vid 1313

Jade says, "It's great that I give your life purpose." And then Jon adds that since adsense is enabled, they actually get money every time someone trolls their comments.

It's funny they talked about trolling this morning because, after being away from their channel for many months, I began watching again yesterday and noticed the large number of trolls clogging up their comment feeds. I guess there are large numbers of people that think it's fun to do that. What a pointless life they must lead if they find value in that kind of thing.

Good job putting it all into perspective, Jade and John.
